Electrical damage reports for insurance claims
After a storm, lightning strike, flood, power surge or fire, your insurer will usually ask for a written report from a licensed electrical contractor before it approves repairs or replacement. I.C.M inspects and tests the installation, documents what failed and why, and gives you a report you can send straight to your insurer, assessor or property manager, together with a separate written quote for the repairs.
We are based at Lockyer Waters and cover Ipswich, the Lockyer Valley and Somerset. Electrical Contractor Licence No. 1507486.
When you need an electrical damage report
Lightning strike or storm damage to the switchboard, service line, meter box or wiring.
Flood water or rain entering a switchboard, sub-board or outdoor equipment.
A network surge or fault that has damaged appliances, the hot water system, pumps or air conditioning.
A vehicle, tree or branch bringing down the consumer mains or a service line.
Fire or heat damage near electrical equipment.
A rental property where the tenant has reported damage and the property manager needs an independent assessment.
What we inspect and test
Visual inspection of the main switchboard, sub-boards, meter box, consumer mains and outdoor equipment for burning, water ingress, mechanical damage or corrosion.
Insulation resistance testing of the affected circuits and fixed appliances.
Earth continuity and polarity checks.
Safety switch (RCD) operation and trip time.
Testing of fixed appliances involved in the incident: hot water, air conditioning, pumps, ovens and cooktops.
Solar and battery systems where fitted: isolation and condition check. Solar panels stay live in daylight even when the mains is off, so this is not a job for anyone unlicensed.
Photographs of every finding, with the model and serial numbers of damaged equipment where accessible.
What is in the report
Property, date of attendance, licence details and the incident as reported to us.
Findings, photographs and test results.
Our assessment of the likely cause, including whether the damage is consistent with the event or is a pre-existing defect. We report what we find; we do not write what the outcome of the claim should be.
Safety status: anything we isolated, and why.
A separate itemised repair quote, so the insurer can see the report and the cost independently.
How it works and what it costs
1. Call or send the quote form with a few photos and your suburb.
2. We attend, make the installation safe, and carry out the inspection and tests.
3. The report is emailed to you as a PDF, with the repair quote.
4. Once the insurer approves, we carry out the repairs and issue a certificate of test where required.
Ask for the report fee when you book; it is confirmed before we attend, so there are no surprises. The repair quote is itemised separately so you and your insurer can see the report and the cost independently.
Before we arrive
Do not keep resetting a tripping safety switch. Unplug what you can safely reach and leave the board alone.
Do not plug in or switch on anything that has been wet.
Stay clear of fallen lines and damaged solar equipment. Report fallen powerlines to your electricity distributor.
Photograph the damage and keep receipts and correspondence with your insurer.
If someone has received an electric shock, call 000 first.
Common questions
Will my insurer accept the report?
Insurers set their own requirements. Our reports include the details assessors usually ask for: licence, findings, photos, test results and a separate repair quote. If your insurer has a specific form or checklist, send it to us and we will complete it.
Do you deal with the insurer directly?
We report to you as the customer. With your permission we will speak to the assessor or property manager to explain the findings.
Can you do the repairs as well?
Yes. The quote is separate from the report, so you can use it as you choose.
What if the damage is not from the storm?
We say so. A report the assessor can trust is worth more to you than one that stretches the facts.
Which areas do you cover?
Ipswich and surrounds, the Lockyer Valley (Gatton, Laidley, Plainland, Forest Hill, Grantham, Helidon, Withcott, Glenore Grove) and Somerset (Fernvale, Lowood, Coominya, Esk, Toogoolawah), plus Minden and Marburg.
